Judging Questions

Like so many luxury brands, BMW is placing its bet on SUV-style vehicles to carry the lion’s share of sales. With 23-inch wheels and a snout as distinguished as Jimmy Durante’s, the big Bimmer announces itself with all the delicacy of a flying hatchet. It does fly, nearly as quickly as an M3, and with the luxury of a 7-Series. A plug-in-hybrid powertrain gives it about 30 miles of all-electric range, rechargeable in about three hours, making it a good grocery-getter for parking lots with wide enough spaces to accommodate BMW’s biggest yacht. The upcoming Red Label model, due later this year, ladles on even more power and luxury, and a base price of nearly $190k.
